Located on the border of Roman Ridge and Airport Residential, Azmera is a Ghanaian institution. You can order a la carte, but don’t do it. The buffet is where it’s at. For GHS 150, you will be treated to every traditional Ghanaian dish. The meal begins with a choice of beautifully seasoned soups and then extends into a glorious buffet. It is all you can eat, so come hungry and experience the culinary variety of Ghana. Reservation recommended.

Buka

Buka is a local favorite smack in the heart of Osu. The food on offer is mostly traditional Ghanaian and absolutely delicious. You can dine al-fresco on the porch or in one of the dining rooms. Ilona

Simply Healthy

When you come to this lovely little health food store, you will be greeted by the owner or a registered nutritionist. It has an impressive stock of Ghanaian products, which include Kaeme’s black soap and shea butter, Gold Coast cocoa powder, Guaman Infusions moringa leaf powder, Asili coffee beans, and So-B honey made from cashew flowers. Make sure to get suggestions from the staff. They’re very knowledgeable.

Relish Health Foods

Relish Health Foods This hidden gem is one of the quirkiest spots in Accra. It has an epic amount of heath food, personal care products, and herbal medications. If you’re looking for natural remedies for health ailments, you can join the queue to sit with one of the trained naturopaths. Ghana harvests quite a few super foods, and many of them, such as moringa and Noni juice, can be found here.

Sandbox Beach Club

The sexiest spot in Accra just got sexier with its recent remodel just in time for the 2019/2020 holiday season. This large outdoor lounge is one of the very few clubs right on the beach. The Republic Bar & Grill

The Republic Bar & Grill This joint is nothing but good vibes. Come here for a bit of karaoke and a beer. Nu Afropolitan Design Studio and Showroom

This airy studio features a chic, modern African aesthetic. This small Osu boutique packs a punch with gorgeous, colorful clothing for men and women. This may be the most well-known contemporary women’s clothing brand coming out of Accra. The designs you’ll find are a funky mix of traditional African fabrics with bold silhouettes. Makola

A stone’s throw from Black Star Square, this market is truly the heartbeat of Accra. Run mostly by market women, this sprawling market offers just about everything you could want – from clothes to produce to books – and is beloved by locals and tourists alike. Upon first glance, the scene appears completely chaotic. But there is a clockwork system and hierarchy in place that make it run smoothly. If you’re looking for printed fabric or kente cloth, this is the place to come. Start by walking around to get a feel for the variety, and remember to wear casual clothes and close-toed shoes.

If you’re looking for gifts to bring back to your family, Accra Arts Centre is your goto market made up of over a hundred stalls and small shops. You can get paintings, carvings, key chains, clothes, jewelry, toys, and much more. Like any open market in Accra, wear casual clothes and close-toed shoes. The sellers are enthusiastic and may greet you at your car to take you into their shops.

This unofficial market is simply a long road where furniture makers have their outdoor workshops. They specialize in wicker but can make all types of furniture from wood and woven fiber materials. If you want something made, go at the beginning of your trip and pick it up at the end. Otherwise, there is always an inventory of baskets, tables and chairs available.

Arts Alliance Gallery

In this building on the water, you’ll find an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures by local artists. Additionally, it houses smaller rooms of clothing, jewelry, accessories and musical instruments.

The Nubuke Foundation is one of the premier private art and culture institutions in Accra. Hamamat African Village

Hamamat African Village This spa is a must see. It is one of the most unique spaces in central Accra because the owner and visionary has brought the aesthetic of a typical African village, mud walls included, to her space. The massages feature handmade shea butter, one of Ghana’s famous exports, which you can also by in the boutique there. To top it all off, there is also a shea butter museum where you can learn all about this glorious product.

Polish’d / Hair Rack

With over 10 nail stations, an upstairs waxing suite and an army of staff members, you can get in and out of Polish’d in a snap. However, once you arrive you won’t want to leave the cushy chairs, drink offers, and excellent service. It’s recommended to make a reservation but drop-ins are welcomed. It’s named after 1957 when the country gained independence. You’ll love the Adinkra symbols that adorn the chocolate pieces.

Savannah Centre Contemporary Art

This special organization requires a bit of planning and travel, but it’s well worth the trip to Tamale to see the work of one of Ghana’s premier artists, Ibrahim Mahama. The Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) is an artist-run project space, exhibition and research hub, cultural repository and artists’ residency. Mahama endeavors to transform the contemporary art scene in Ghana and is well on his way to doing just that.

Paa Joe’s Coffin Works

If you venture out of Accra, you must go to see Paa Joe’s studio. He is internationally recognized for his fantasy coffins, which he makes in bespoke shapes that express the spirit of the deceased. What you will see are truly works of art. From chameleons to airplanes to shoes, he can make literally anything from wood. The studio is about 45 minutes from the center of Accra, so bring some water for the ride and enjoy the scenery.
